Natural Resources Warning on Mining from San Pedro

The Ministry of Natural Resources has received complaints of increased illicit mining and dredging activities within the marine environment surrounding San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. In a release issued today, the ministry confirms that the Mining Unit has teamed up with the Hol Chan Marine Reserve staff to investigate these activities to confirm the extent and those involved. Necessary steps will be taken against any person or company that infringes of the regulations. The release further states that it is an offense to engage in mining and dredging activities, and remove minerals without first obtaining a permit or license from the Mining Unit. Of note is that an Environmental Compliance Plan issued by the Department of the Environment, is not a permit or license and approvals are still required from the requisite regulatory bodies for permits or licenses for various activities under an ECP.
