UB President Leads Central American Universities
President Clement Sankat of the University of Belize has assumed the Vice Presidency of Consejo Superior Universitario Centro Americano or what is known in English as the Central American Higher Education Council. Sankat’s Vice Presidency tenure will be for this academic year July, 2017 to June, 2018. Following that term, Sankat will take up the Presidency from 2018-2019. Professor Sankat was asked to assume these leadership positions by the Secretary General of CSUCA Dr. Alfonso Fuentes Soria. He recently visited UB to meet with President Sankat; that visit included a courtesy call with the Prime Minister of Belize. Sankat is expected to provide leadership guidance as it relates to quality, standards and mobility in higher education in Central America. During his tenure, areas he will advocate for are the development of strong sporting and cultural relationships among the institutions and the exchange of staff, students, library information and joint academic programmes. This announcement also signals hope that with Sankat at the helm, it will help to position UB as an institution of choice for Central American students who wish to pursue education in an English speaking setting. CSUCA is a sixty-nine-year-old organization that serves as the council of higher education for institutions in Belize, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The council is based in Guatemala City.
