Hilberto Campos Bows Out as Mayor of Corozal Town
In the northernmost municipality of Corozal, current U.D.P. mayor Hilberto Campos says he will not be contesting for a fifth term. Campos has been at the helm of the Corozal Town Council for twelve years and is stepping down for several reasons. While covering the weather, our News Five crew asked Campos about his future outside of politics. Here’s what he had to say:
Hilberto Campos, Mayor, Corozal Town
“I’m not contesting the elections. I have been the mayor for the last twelve years. I think that I could have comfortably run again and win. I have served my people well. I think that it is time that it is time to give another leader a break to bring new ideas to Corozal and to continue the development. I’m full of energy and I am willing to serve in another capacity. That’s about it.”
Duane Moody
“Sir, but why fix something weh noh bruk? That’s what they always say. You’ve been there; you’ve been doing well so why change that?”
Hilberto Campos
“I think four terms is good enough for me. Again, I am full of energy, but I told you I am willing to serve in another capacity. It is not just mayorship that you can serve your people. I’m willing to serve in any capacity in my community. Comfortably I would have won again, but there is no need for that. Give somebody else a chance to bring new ideas; to refresh the whole thing.”
Duane Moody
“Sir are you hinting to maybe general elections?”
Hilberto Campos
“It does have to be general; I said any capacity as long as it is service to the people, I am more than willing to help.”
Sources to News Five say that Campos’ name has surfaced as a possible replacement to Valentino Blanco, who was recently removed as the C.E.O. at the Corozal Free Zone.
