Mexicans triumph in tennis invitational

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re boxed into this fresh deal of Sports Monday. The defending semi-pro football champion Sagitun of Independence came to the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday in a must win situation against Kulture Yabra after falling in a 1-zip blast at home last week in this semi-final round of the Prime Minister’s Knockout Tournament.

Immediately into this ballgame an error in communication by the Yabra defence gives Sagitun a clear shot at goal, but they fail to maximise on this opportunity.

Sagitun again attacks, this time off the corner kick, but the breakthrough remains out of reach. Another corner kick finds the streaking Bent Burgess, but he simply cannot get control of the pill in time.

Yabra finally gets some offence going off this spotkick and it’s a beautiful bend over the wall by number three Wilmer Garcia, but the scoreboard remains clean.

Now watch this wicked pass from midfield ran on to by a speeding Emory Nunez, whose right away left foot blast gives Yabra a 1-zip lead.

Yabra then looks to make it 2-zip when Nunez gets this ball to number fifteen, who fires a mean right foot that inches just outside the sticks.

Meanwhile folks, this defensive error gives Norman Nunez an open look at goal, and his vicious grass burner inches under the arm of Giovanni Rodriguez as Yabra takes a 2-zip lead going into intermission.

So we go to second half and it’s Sagitun searching for the equaliser, but Shane Moody is properly positioned in goal. Off this spotkick, Sagitun gets another look at goal, but Yabra comes up with tough defence. At the other end, it’s Yabra with the opportunity to go up 3-zip, but Paulie Bradley fails to convert from point-blank range.

Nevertheless, Yabra manages to hold on to the 2-zip W to dismiss Sagitun from the Prime Minister’s Cup.

Also dismissed yesterday were the young upstarts Valley Pride of Pomona, who fortified game two to the San Pedro Seahawks. After being pummelled 5-1 last week, I guess that’s the natural thing to do. The two game championship series between Kulture Yabra and the San Pedro Seahawks gets off this Sunday at the M.C.C. Grounds.

In cricket news, Berlan became the first team to reach the Harrison Parks finals by completing the two game sweep on Excellence of Double Head on Saturday with a one hundred and seventy-eight to one hundred and seventy-five final score, they had three wickets to spare in this one. Meanwhile, United forced a decisive game three with Wicked Eleven of Flower’s Bank after posting a ninety-one to eighty-nine win on Saturday. Game three will come up this Saturday and we will keep you posted.

Turning to the lawn tennis scene, the Belize Pickwick Club presented both the over forty and open men’s double tournaments over the weekend.

We join the finals of the open tournament with Billy Musa Junior and Michael Meighan down at set against Enrique Bautista and Arsenio Tristen of Mexico.

Bautista serves to Meighan, who goes to Tristen, who goes to Musa until Bautista tries the smash that gives the Belizeans a much-needed point.

Now it’s Billy’s turn to serves and they look good until Meighan’s smash bounces out of boundary. Unfortunately for the local guys, late in the match when it really counted, they came up with just too many double faults as the Mexicans were enjoying a 6-5 lead. And thus, they wound up losing 6-4, 7-5 in two sets. And yes Billy Junior, frustration sure ain’t no fun. (throws racket)

The over forty class David Madrid and Rubin Majerado beat Sonny Meighan and Billy Musa Senior 6-4, 6-4 to take that title.

Hey good show, we invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
