Two murders rock city over weekend

Story Picture
Two more young Belizean men are now counted among the dead as the rough and tumble streets of Belize City provided a bloody backdrop for separate murders over the weekend. The mayhem started on Saturday night when twenty-two year old Eugene Blades was gunned down as he drove his pickup truck along Faber’s Road. Blades, who lives about a hundred yards from where he was taken down, had slowed on the approach to a speed bump. That was apparently the window of opportunity the gunman needed as residents report hearing a single gunshot and later observed the injured man trying to make his way into a nearby yard. Blades was rushed to K.H.M.H., but there was little doctors could do and he died while undergoing treatment. The police have since detained two people whom they believe could assist in the investigation.

And tonight another suspect is in police custody as the cops are busy trying to solve the second weekend homicide. Patrick Jones reports.

The family of twenty-four year old Dwayne Lemoth is still trying to make sense of the brutal slaying of their loved one early this morning in Belize City.

Gwendolyn Gladden, Grandmother

“About three o’clock when the police come and call and we come out and they asked if here that Dwayne Lemoth lived. I told him yes. He said Dwayne get stabbed. I asked if he dead, and he said no, but he critical.”

Shortly after that, Gwendolyn Gladden, Dwayne’s grandmother, said she got the bad news.

“Exactly what happened as Lemoth walked home after a night of partying at this night club is not known. But the family believes that the young man was viciously attacked by someone who rode up in a car.”

The bloodstained sidewalk indicates that after he was stabbed, Lemoth stumbled along West Collet Canal and onto Cemetery Road where he met up with a police patrol in the area.

G. Michael Reid, Police Press Officer

“We understand that he ran there after being stabbed. Obviously having enough strength to run towards where the police vehicle was. Initial investigations revealed that he was somewhere along Collet Canal when he had a misunderstanding with another male person. Police have detained one person in connection with this incident.”

“What is it looking like, is it a misunderstanding? What were they fighting about?”

Patrick Jones

“Certainly, it looks like at this point, our investigation is still in the preliminary stage, that there was some sort of misunderstanding, which might have been the result of a previous misunderstanding. We have yet to get to the bottom of this, but certainly as soon as we do we will bring you abreast of developments.”

“Well my daughter gone dah hospital and she see the way how he is stabbed and he dead and she come back home and she told us that he got a stab in his chest, dah inna his chest he got stabbed.”

Lemoth’s grandmother says that when he left home late Sunday night to visit the nightclub, which he frequents, none of them thought it would be the last time they would see Dwayne alive. The family says Dwayne just got mixed up with the wrong crowd and paid the ultimate price for it. Patrick Jones, for News 5.

Dwayne Lemoth’s mother will arrive from the states on Tuesday for his funeral sometime later this week. The twenty-four year old leaves behind his parents, four brothers and eight sisters. The suspect detained by police is believed to be the driver of the taxi in which the alleged murderer was riding. The two weekend murders are the sixteenth and seventeenth for this year.
