C.I.B. officer killed in N. Highway accident
On Sunday the Belize Police Department lost a good cop, not in the line fire, but to the death trap our nation’s highways have become. Just before eight on Sunday night, twenty-six year old Lincoln Kellyman was driving his silver Isuzu pickup from Corozal towards Orange Walk town when between miles fifty-one and fifty-two he collided with a green Jeep Cherokee. Reports are that the Cherokee careened out of control and into Kellyman’s lane, causing the head-on collision. Kellyman and one of his two passengers: thirty-two year old Uimal Kumer, were fatally injured and doctors at the Northern Regional Hospital could do nothing save them. The third passenger, Omar Ceballos of Belize City was treated for minor injuries and later released. As for the driver of the Jeep Cherokee, Gustavo Cardenas, News 5 understands that he fled the scene after the accident. Police sources tell us they suspect it was because Cardenas was under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. This morning, Cardenas showed up at the Orange Walk police station and is detained pending charges. Funeral services for P.C. Lincoln Kellyman will take place at three p.m. on Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Libertad in Corozal.
