Suspect charged in hit and run of cop

The driver detained after the hit and run of a police officer in Orange Walk has been arrested and charged…and they threw the book at him. Thirty-one year old Edilberto Gutierrez has been arraigned on charges of attempted murder, negligent grievous harm, driving without due care and attention, driving with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit, failure to report an accident, failure to stop and render aid, reckless driving, wilfully refusing to stop when directed to do so and two counts of damage to property, because checkpoint signs and a police service revolver were damaged in the incident. On Sunday evening, Sergeant Francisco Ack and several other officers were manning a checkpoint on the Northern Highway when police say Gutierrez, behind the wheel of a dump truck, barrelled through them, injuring Ack in the process. The police officer was later admitted to K.H.M.H. where he remains in stable condition recovering from a broken arm, fractured ribs and a large cut wound to the head.
