Four-car pileup on Northern Highway injures 3
And believe it or not, today, the bloody dance of metal on asphalt was still going, this time on the Northern Highway. Traffic was backed up for over an hour near mile seven when just after noon a four-vehicle pile up blocked the highway. According to police at the scene, the three vehicles were heading north towards Ladyville and a dump truck was going in the direction of Belize City when the accident occurred. We understand that this late model Mitsubishi Montero, belonging to the Government of Belize, and being driven at the time by Director of Public Prosecutions, Kirk Anderson, crashed into the dirt-laden dump truck. As the vehicles careened out of control, two other cars rammed into them. When the dust settled, three people, including the driver of the dump truck, were injured and had to be rushed to the hospital. Peter Carter, the driver of one of the vehicles caught in the metal melee says he did his best to avoid a collision.
Peter Carter
“When he got up here, he ran into a sand truck that a man was driving from Boom, I don’t know his name, and he ran into the man and the vehicle spin. So what happened, I had to cut away from the guy when the guy started sliding on the side. I had to cut away from him, or else I would have been dead. And the other people that were right behind got caught in the accident.”
Carter went on to allege that Anderson appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, but the D.P.P. says that even though he has no recollection of what happened in the seconds before the accident, he flatly denies that he was drunk.
Kirk Anderson, Director of Public Prosecutions
“What I can tell you is that I am not intoxicated. Do I look intoxicated?”
Patrick Jones
“People at the scene are saying that you are intoxicated, sir. That is basically what we’re trying to get at.”
Kirk Anderson
“I am telling you I’m not.”
The three people injured in the blue pickup are Dirk Mueller, forty-two, thirty-eight year old Angelina Mueller, and four year old Sofia Mueller. Angelina is listed in stable condition with a broken upper left arm. Sofia suffered a fractured right thigh and abdominal trauma and is listed in critical, but stable condition. Dirk has been treated and released. The driver of the dump truck, forty-five year old Edward Humphreys has been admitted to ward in stable condition, recovering from injuries to his back and lower body. D.P.P. Kirk Anderson suffered no physical injury.
