G.O.B. promises preschools more resources

It’s a cliché, it’s a song, but goodness knows it’s true: our children are the future. And in the world of education, preschool is the environment where little girls and boys learn the basics of life. But as many teachers can attest to, often time resources are limited. This issue was just one that was highlighted during Child Stimulation Month, and a point that Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Francis Fonseca, addressed as he met with more than a hundred and fifty preschool teachers this morning.

“But we at the Ministry of Education know that early childhood education brings with it many challenges, not the least of which is a lack of adequate financial resources to provide the tools, and very necessary, tools and materials required for a proper preschool education. You preschool teachers are called upon to perform many roles: you are teacher, guardian, counsellor, caregiver, and advisor, just to name a few. Very often, and I know this from personal experience, very often, many of you go into your own pockets to help the little ones who attend your schools. So yours is not an easy task, this is why you need, and not only need, but deserve, the Ministry of Education’s full support. I am here with you this morning to say to you, you have that full support.”

“We will very shortly undertake a full and comprehensive review of our existing programme to find out exactly where we are and to set out a clear vision for where we want to take early childhood education. We want to carry out this exercise in full consultation with you and all other relevant stakeholders in this area.”

This morning’s meeting was part of Teacher’s Day activities to mark the end of Child Stimulation Month.
