Drivers: slow down for national animal
Drivers in the Belize District are being cautioned tonight, but the warning has nothing to do with bad roads or escaped prisoners. The problem is a tapir, better known by the Belizean name of mountain cow that has been sighted frequently along the newly paved road between Hattieville and Burrell Boom. The Ministry of Natural Resources reports that a baby tapir was killed by a car several months ago and the larger version may be its mother. The national animal is most likely to be out in the evening or night and motorists are asked to please exercise care.
