Belmopan woman is charged for bad U.S. cheques
As the demand for U.S. dollars continues to outrun supply, there is still a fair amount of informal money changing going on countrywide…and sometimes a U.S. dollar deal goes sour. That’s what happened in San Ignacio as according to police, businessman Hilberto Pulido reported that in January and February he purchased three U.S. cheques totalling one thousand, three hundred and fifty dollars from one Diane Navarette Bevans of Belmopan. Those cheques, however, turned out to be drawn on an empty account. Navarette Bevans has been charged with three counts of obtaining property by deception. Sources in the business community report that this type of scenario is not uncommon, but in most cases the police are called in only after private means of coercion prove unsuccessful.
