4 New Attorneys Called Including Magistrate

Hector Guerra

Joining the younger Courtenay on the roll are Magistrate Carlon Mendoza and two young attorneys out of the Marine Parade Chambers founded by Godfrey Smith. Hector Guerra is from San Ignacio and has a passion for helping the poor and underprivileged. Zahira Flores is originally from Big Creek in the south but has practiced all over the United States. Now she comes home to share her experiences. We spoke to both of them following their admission this morning.

Hector Guerra, Called to the Bar

“I have always wanted to study law because I’ve always wanted to represent people who are disenfranchised and people who are underprivileged.”

Zahira Flores

Zahira Flores, Called to the Bar

“I primarily did some human rights law work in Asia, in Latin America and in Africa prior to coming to Belize. I’ve also been doing some contract and commercial law work and I hope to continue in that path here. I couldn’t imagine myself being anything but a lawyer. I enjoy the profession; I enjoy the work. It’s a humbling profession and I look forward to being in it for a very long time. As they say, lawyers never retire, they just die.”

Well, I am sure with all of the land fraud cases coming out of the Lands Dept., these new attorneys will be busy, busy, busy!
