Elrington Wonders If Move is in Belize’s Best Interests

The Foreign Minister went on to state that as he understands that the purpose of introducing or repealing legislation is to serve the greater purpose of the Belizean people. Despite the fact that Belize is no longer negotiating with Guatemala and therefore has the right to reclaim its maritime territory, Elrington confesses to being baffled that the P.U.P. would choose this time to introduce an amendment, and do so in the Senate rather than the House of Representatives.

“Really and truly, when legislation is introduced and passed, the purpose really is to benefit the country one way or the other. I am not sure what is their argument and thinking now for wanting to do it, whether it is going to be beneficial to the body politic, the nation as a whole, but we would have to wait and see what argument they come up with. But you don’t pass legislation or repeal legislation just to pass or to repeal; it has to be because you believe that it is going to benefit the nation as a whole, in some way or the other. And when the P.U.P.’s were in office they didn’t do anything about it, so I find it strange that now the members of the party would want to be introducing it in the Senate for repeal. That, I find baffling.”
