50 mile run raises money for Stella Maris
On Sunday, while most of us are taking it easy, Michael Roberts, an ex-British soldier, will be running fifty miles for charity. Roberts’ aim is to raise two thousand dollars for the Stella Maris School and he reports that he has already received a favourable response from several private companies. The run will commence at four a.m. from the junction of the Western and Hummingbird Highways. According to Roberts, he started training for the event three months ago and is optimistic that he will complete the run in six hours.

“I wanted to raise some money for one of the local charities. I have done a lot of this in the past in England and Belize, and Stella Maris was the one that came top of list. And so Sunday, what I plan to do is run from Belmopan to Belize City and it will be just me doing it. There will be a support vehicle, a company vehicle behind us with a couple of guys from work, Roberto and Jose. And instead of just asking local companies for money, what we plan to do is advertise on the back of the vehicle, some eleven by seventeen and twenty-four by twenty-four ads, so local companies can get some exposure to.”
“As I said, we looked at a lot of the charities in Belize and the Stella Maris school is a special school for kids and there’s a lot of children in wheelchairs and with learning difficulties and whatever. It was just pretty close to my heart and that’s the one that came up on top of the list.”

“How have you been preparing for Sunday’s run?”
Michael Roberts
“I’ve been training for two months now, since Christmas and the Radisson Fort George let me use the gym on a daily basis, let me use the pool to swim. I got a gym at home, so I have been training hard for it.”
Roberts says he hopes the tortuous run will raise a worthwhile sum for the benefit of the special children of the Stella Maris School and looks forward to your support. If you would like to help out with sponsorship please call Roberts at 615-3141.
