City fire guts home, chars school building
An afternoon fire in Belize City has left one man homeless and a school building charred and waterlogged. Around one o’clock today, residents of Freetown Road saw smoke coming from this wooden building at number fifty-two Freetown Road. Within minutes, flames had engulfed the structure and began to lick at the Bethel primary school building. Fire fighters and volunteers worked quickly to douse the school and save the institutions’ recently acquired computers. But according to Fire Chief Henry Baizar, there was nothing they could do for the building where the fire originated.
Henry Baizar, Fire Chief
“That one was completely gutted with fire, and this one, the eave was catching. We had to concentrate on both buildings at the same time. The reason for that was that all the fire from the first building was going onto the church, so we had to fight both fires at the same time. That’s the reason why we had one length of hose initially at this building and one length of hose in through the church upstairs.”

“Do you know what started the fire in the first house yet?”
Henry Baizar
“No, no one was at home they said they went to some rally that they had this morning and they come back and found their house on fire.”
Janelle Chanona
“Do you know if there were any casualties, any injuries, any damages as yet?”
Henry Baizar
“None of those we haven’t receive as yet.”
According to the fire department, they have yet to talk to the owner of the home where the fire started. That person has been identified to us as Aedio Lino. Lino is said to have lived in the house alone. The school children of Bethel Primary School were off on holiday today.
