Dangriga airstrip re-opens after renovation
If you are a traveller to southern Belize, there is some good news as the Dangriga Town Airstrip was officially re-opened today after weeks of repairs. The work included a hot mix surfacing, adequate lighting and improved safety features. Tourism Minister, Manuel Heredia, was on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon, declaring the runway open.

“The project came about because of the fact that the airstrip, before it deteriorated, I think it was built shortly before election. It was redone but in a very short time and I think the job that was done was very poor. So we saw the need to rehabilitate the airstrip and with help from the COCESNA group, we managed to get three hundred thousand from them and fifty thousand from our own resources and a hundred thousand from the government of Belize, which brought the total cost to four hundred and fifty thousand dollars, which to me is extremely reasonable for the amount of work that was done. But it is our intent and we’re putting every effort to ensure that not only Dangriga, but all the airstrips in Belize City and the other districts are rehabilitated within our five years of office and that is a promise to the country.”
Work that has already been completed are the Punta Gorda and the Ranchito airstrips. Meanwhile, Heredia says renovations of the Belize City Municipal airstrip are estimated at around eight million dollars.
