Party leaders unite on future of children
The political fur may be flying and the debate may be off, but that has not stopped the two party leaders from jointly endorsing a secure future for the nation’s young people. Today in Belmopan Prime Minister Said Musa and Opposition Leader Dean Barrow signed a memorandum of understanding for the implementation of a national plan of action for children and adolescents. Representatives of the two political parties have been meeting regularly since December at the instigation of UNICEF to reach consensus on an initiative which charts a course through 2015. The areas for action include education, health, child protection, HIV/AIDS, the family and culture. UNICEF provides vital funding for government projects and maintains strong contacts across a wide cross section of the community. Perhaps next time around we can ask them to organise a political debate.
