But What Will Happen to Broken Streets?
But a common complaint about some of the concreted streets especially those done in the early days of the Municipal Bond funding, is that wear and tear have caused them to break up significantly. It is an issue the City Council has grappled with and today Mayor Darrell Bradley said the Council will get behind those contractors whose work has not held up. But he also contended that a majority of the work has been up to standard.
Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
“On a whole I would say that we are very satisfied with the level and quality of work that we’ve been given – we’re not satisfied with everything – but the areas where we’re not satisfied with, we’re working with the various contractors to do remedial works and they have been quite willing to do that. In terms of these particular works as well, we are ensuring that the contract has a defects liability clause, so that we will not pay a last portion of the payment until a significant amount of period after our three-year payment cycle. If anything if not satisfactory in relation to these works, then we’re going to delay payment or we’re going to stall.”
