Pickstock P.U.P. candidate says he’s ready
With the election date now officially set for March fifth, over the weekend politicians from all over the country jumped into high gear, plastering every naked lamp post with signs and going house to house with renewed enthusiasm. In the Pickstock Division, three people will go head to head for area representative: Diane Haylock represents the U.D.P. while Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington will run as an independent. The P.U.P.’s Godfrey Smith, on hand for the ceremonies at the Vital Statistics Unit, says he is ready for his challengers.

“I would say not worried, but I approach all candidates in the same way. I will not be complacent, I will not take the voters of Pickstock for granted, I will do what I have always done and I what I know to do best, which is to work as hard as I possibly can to have as decisive and definitive a victory as I possibly can.”

“What’s the Smith strength? The biggest thing you have going for you?”

“I would say house to house personal contact with people. Sitting with them, listening to them, trying to address the needs as best as one can for the division. I think we’ve made some good advances in the close to two years, but not quite two years, that I have been the candidate. And I think with a full five year term, if I’m elected to office as the representative, will give ample time to do considerably more to the Pickstock Division.”

“How are you approaching voters in your division who are either affiliated in some way with the U.D.P., or maybe just have anti-P.U.P. sentiments right now?”

“I can say this quite frankly and forthrightly, I do not shy away from any house in Pickstock. I freely visit any house, whether they have been labelled in the past as blue or red or whatever, and I can say quite honestly to you that I have been able to approach every single house and was welcomed in every house. That was so when I was a candidate in the intra party convention and it remains so today.”
And if you think that a three-way race in Pickstock is complicated, how about a four-way contest in Lake I? On Friday businessman Patrick Rogers announced his intention to run for the seat as an independent. He joins fellow independent candidate Hubert Elrington, U.D.P. challenger Tony Leslie, and the P.U.P. incumbent, Cordel Hyde. While many aspirants all over the nation have announced their candidacies, the real test comes on Nomination day, February seventeenth, when candidates will have to officially sign up and pay their five hundred dollar deposit.
