Govt. donates to Belmopan home
A childcare centre in Belmopan is tonight the grateful recipient of a monetary donation, courtesy of the Government of Belize. According to a release issued today by the Ministry of Human Development, SAVES-Marla’s House of Hope accepted a cheque for ten thousand dollars. According to SAVES–the Sexual Abuse Victims Education and Support Program–the money will be used in the construction of a new building for the organization. Work on the facility, designed to house sixteen children and a supervisor, is expected to begin next week. The British High Commission, Rotaract Club and the Social Investment Fund have also contributed time, money and services towards this project, while the Belmopan City Council has provided an acre of land in the Mountain View area. Presently, there are six children living at the home but since the facility opened its doors in March 1998, more than a hundred children, and seven women, have found safety at Marla’s House of Hope. The new building is expected to be completed by June of this year. If you would like to make a contribution to the project please contact chairperson of the board of directors, Yolanda August, at 822-3982.
