Salvation Army hands out food hampers

The Salvation Army gave out eight-hundred food hampers to needy families today. It is an annual event for the Salvation Army – they use monies raised and support from donors such as the Belize Bank and other corporate institutions to make the hampers. News Five went out to the Salvation Army’s Regent Street office where hundreds of Belizeans lined up to get their food packages.

“We are going to have distributions at three different locations today because we don’t want to have such a big crowd you can’t manage; so we have 41 Regent Street here, 12 Cemetery Road and 25 Castle Street. Total families to benefit will be.”

“How did you select these families?”

Major Joliker Leandre

“These are people, who, over the years we know. Some have come and join in, but over the years we register and as you would see for yourself these are people who need the help. Some of them are on our permanent list and so every month they get supplies and some of them are quite new. We are confident that those who are benefitting are those who really need the help.”

Andrea Polanco

“Now, tell us about the hampers you are giving out today?”

Major Joliker Leandre

“We have a number of items – it is a total package that would give the family everything they need for the Christmas. We have rice, beans, flour, sugar, choco, milk, oil and other things they need to make a meal.”

Andrea Polanco

“And for these families, something like this goes a long way?”

Major Joliker Leandre

“Yes. Year after year they come. We appreciate that God has given us the privilege to assist these families.”
