Sagitun tops Yabra in football action

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’ve just climbed aboard for this sweet ride on Sports Monday. Football fervour reached fever pitch as week three of the Belize Premier Football League playoffs found Sagitun of Independence hosting the defending champion Kulture Yabra of Belize City Saturday night. We give you this look at the venue to back up our assertion that football fever really raged Saturday night.

Looking to be the protagonist, Sagitun uses this spot-kick to threaten the Yabra goal; and basically that’s all they do accomplish right here.

It’s more Sagitun when Bent Burgess turns on this ball with the left foot that is handled by Shane Moody. Nevertheless folks, Sagitun controls this ballgame and Roberto Muschamp takes this opportunity to display his long range, which is potent but not quite accurate.

Talk about letting someone off the hook, Vallan Symms gets away with this error when this thunderous bomb from the ever hardworking Roberto Muschamp sneaks over the crossbar.

Yabra finally gets a look at goal off this spot-kick from Centenio, but the subsequent header from Derron Jones is straight at Geovanny Rodriguez. Again, Centenio serves up the goodies for Yabra, but Robert Cunningham misplays and the rebound picked up by Norman Nunez fails to make any real connection. At the half it’s a nil-nil score.

So we go to second half. Wilhelm Coe gets this header to put Sagitun ahead, but instead gets a lecture from goleador Bent Burgess.

It’s still Sagitun commanding the ballgame as Roberto Muschamp lays ways to his man and with bad intention fires, but Vallan Symms makes the stop in front of goal. Here’s another scoring attempt that goes awry as Sagitun ratchets up the pressure.

Today seems to be going Sagitun’s way and Bent Burgess tries to impress the scoreboard with this left foot that inches outside the sticks.

Could it be now for Sagitun off this corner kick? Actually no folks, Roberto Muschamp can’t get the pill past Moody. For Roberto Muschamp, the idea is to try and try again. And again he misses the target.

Okay, now it’s Bent Burgess’s turn to pull the trigger, but he finds it impossible. Of course, the way Yabra is playing, sooner or later it’s bound to happen. Roberto Muschamp gets the nice feed, does his thing to the max, and just like that the south leads 1-zip.

When the long whistle sounds it brings Sagitun’s second playoff win and Yabra’s first defeat in the post season.

Hilberto Muschamp, Sagitun

“The Muschamp brothers giveth and the Muschamp brothers taketh. They played us the first game, we came back and we showed them that the Muschamp brothers is for real.”

Roberto Muschamp, Sagitun

“I played with Yabra last year and I have noticed during this season, the groundball has always been a problem for Shane, that’s my opinion. And I figure that if I get the ball low enough with good power I could sore. The problem in the first half with the shots, the ball went high and one went wide. But in the second half I knew if I got the break, settle down, take my time, get off a good shot, I will score and it happened for me. Thanks be to God.”

Norman “Tilliman” Nunez, Kulture Yabra

“We came out to win this ballgame today. We’re not blaming the ref, but certain calls should have been made in this ballgame that he didn’t make. There was a big call at the end of the game that he didn’t make and that really take a toll on us. We came out here to play football, we don’t want no referee come taking our game away from us like that.”

Q: Now the winning streak momentum has been broken, you think you could get it back? And how soon?”

Norman “Tilliman” Nunez

“Well certainly. Kulture has never lost two games in a row from we named Kulture, so it’s a big plus for us, we think we’ll bounce back next week and come with a victory. We need a victory to stay on top.”

In the other playoff match yesterday at San Pedro, Deon Frazier scored in sudden death to give Builder’s Hardware Bandits of Belmopan a 1-zip W, a much needed W over San Pedro.

Thus, Yabra, Sagitun and Builder’s are all tied with two wins, one loss apiece, while San Pedro has fallen to zero and three and is out of the championship picture.

Meanwhile folks, the celebrity games sponsored by the National Sports Council took centre stage Friday at the City Centre.

The veteran game saw Lynn Young jump against Marion Usher to get things started. Lynn Young gets the feed from Sony Meighan and he hits his shot and this ballgame was more about fun and fundraising rather than competition, and we certainly applaud the efforts mounted by the Bengay leaguers. When its our home team loses 32 to 35, but all the celebrities certainly had fun.

Game two featured the younger version of celebrities and we are all celebrities, and we are all celebrities, even if it is by association. In fact folks, take a look at the A team which include luminaries like Janelle Chanona, Cordel Hyde and Anamarie Bennett. Now here’s the B team featuring Norman Nunez, Jules Vasquez and Ernest Meighan.

This ballgame had to go to overtime play, but the B team prevailed and we say good show and hope that the sports council did raise the funds.

That’s our show for today, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
