Career banker dies of leukemia
Tonight, the banking community, along with many other Belizeans, mourns the death of one of its own. On Friday, forty-five year old Leopoldo Waight, Director of Provident Bank, died in the United States from complications caused by leukemia. “Polo” as he was well known, began his career at the Royal Bank of Canada in 1979. From 1987, when the Belize Bank took over Royal’s operations, through October of 1999, Waight held the positions of Branch Administration Officer and Senior Assistant Manager of Loans. The up and coming professional then moved to Provident, working as manager, then general manager before being nominated as director, a post he held until the time of his death. Waight was most recently featured on News 5 in November as a graduate of U.B.’s executive M.B.A. programme. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at St. Joseph’s Church. News 5 extends condolences to the Waight family, especially his widow, Jacqueline and daughter Giselle.
