NEMO/CEMO and Human Services to Rescue

The Ministry of Human Development and the City Emergency Management Organization have teamed up to provide much needed immediate relief for the families. Today, Minister Edmond Castro and Philip Willoughby met with the victims at the City Hall to distribute some food and other necessities. CEMO says that majority of the twenty-eight fire victims will be staying in dorms at the M.C.C. Grounds. This is only a medium term plan instituted by the Human Services Department. Castro and Willoughby tells us more about the relief efforts.

“It was three buildings that were totally destroyed and consist of eight families and a total of twenty-eight persons affected. So, we teamed up – NEMO would normally have a package that we provide to fire victims – normally we have table top stove, mattresses, sheets and that sort of thing. So, there is a standard basic NEMO package that we provide for each family and we have the Human Services which will kick in and see how best they can assist the families like maybe somewhere to go for a short period of time until they can get back on their feet.”

“When will they be receiving these items?”

“We already have the items. We stopped by the NEMO warehouse in Ladyville and those items are outside ready for them to receive – ahorita.   As NEMO, what we do since I took over the reins of NEMO, we provide the standard package that I think they need. You need to cook, you get a table-top stove for you. You need gas? We provide a gas tank for you – we nuh provide a full gas tank, we provide a gas tank fuh yuh. You need sheet? You need a mattress, the basic things we will try to help you with along with some food package.”

“They are extremely hopeful. They recognize that the fire has happened to them. I don’t know if it has sunken in yet, because you know when you di look fi your pillow and the bed tonight, it will not be your home that you will be walking into. So, that will set in at a little later on; that will take its toll. But we hope we can mitigate against that and return them smoothly to a state of normalcy.”
