Outgoing City Mayor Calls for Public Sector Reform

Darrell Bradley

Earlier this week, News Five sat down with outgoing Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley in his final days as head of the municipal government.  The two-term mayor spoke candidly about the need for good governance, as well as the doing away with corruption in public office.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“We need strong leadership in the country and we need people who know what needs to be done and who are bold enough to get it done.  I think that we have spoken a lot about reform in the society.  I think we need public sector reform.  I’ve seen a deterioration of services as a lawyer, in terms of accessing services at the various governmental departments.  We need to make sure that government is efficient and you’re delivering quality, timely services.  You need to deal with the issue of corruption in government, that’s a huge issue.  I think that that straddles both political parties and we need to stop paying lip service to it and just put in place meaningful legislation, I’ve heard a lot about the unjust enrichment legislation.  We’ve heard a lot of things in relation to people making their disclosures according to the Integrity Commission and legislation that governs that.  These are things we need to be serious about if we want the country to move forward, and I think that as a government we need to have an economic development strategy.  What are the priority areas?  What are we doing?  Are we getting the municipalities which are really the centers for economic development, are we getting those communities and leaders involved in one national plan to move the country forward?”

Mayor Bradley will step down from his seat at City Hall in the days leading up to the March seventh municipal elections.
