Some Parts of Cayo Inundated by Rains

In the west, water levels rose cutting off access at Iguana Creek Bridge to the Spanish Lookout Community. Several other villages such as Santa Teresa and San Marcos are inundated. According to Assistant NEMO Coordinator Johnny Ramclam, western Belize experienced continuous rains, which started from six-thirty on Thursday through to this morning. In Benque Viejo at least two families had to seek higher grounds because of flooding. Ramclam explains.

“As of this morning, I personally received reports about six o’clock this morning from my liaise person in Spanish Lookout that the bridge was up to six feet under water and the last report I got about two hours ago, say four o’clock, it was about three feet above the bridge.  The water is receding at this moment, so we expecting by tomorrow the bridge should be accessible.”

“There is what we call a hotspot in San Marcos area which is a culvert that cannot handle the volume of water so they also have about three feet of water that is on the road. But the San Marcos area is just one family that lives there. So we’ve been in contact with them and the villagers are okay.  No one was evacuated. We did have a family that was affected in Benque Viejo, but we went in there today and did a damage assessment with them, but it was just like two feet of water that went into their house, so it is minimal water damage. But we are rendering some humanitarian aid for; I think it is two families.”
