Western Union hit by major embezzlement

At first we thought it was a misprint on the police press release. Three hundred thousand dollars is the amount allegedly embezzled over a six week period from the Western Union office belonging to Belize Transportation Agencies on Mapp Street in Belize City. According to the police report, a supervisor noticed something wrong in the accounts on December ninth and ordered an audit that confirmed the massive deficit. Late this evening Managing Director Michael Singh told News 5 that while he could not confirm an exact figure, he believes that it was less than the three hundred thousand dollar figure quoted by police. Singh said that he believes a clerk formerly employed at the agency sent money to people abroad even though no corresponding funds were paid here in Belize. That suspect, Marlon Aldana, has been detained by police pending further investigations. Singh says that whatever the final figure turns out to be they will prosecute the case to the full extent of the law.

In related news, the K.B.H. Security company also finds itself on the wrong end of an internal theft. They reported to police that an audit has revealed that during a twenty-eight day period this summer, over twenty thousand dollars was siphoned from the business. As in the case of Western Union, the finger is being pointed at a former employee, that person has yet to be detained.
