A sign of the season: traffic jams

Story Picture
It is the one consequence of the festive season that many Belizeans, particularly residents of the city, could easily do without. What I’m talking about is traffic…and guess what? With more cars on the road than ever before, the situation is not getting better.

These days if you’re coming downtown, it would be easier to park your vehicle and walk…that is if you could even find a parking space.

Kent Gabb, Director, Traffic Department

“This Christmas season is always very difficult and you know heavy traffic from all districts, people coming into the city to do their final shopping for the Christmas, you know how that is.”

The bumper to bumper traffic creates delays that while short by world standards, are extremely frustrating for freewheeling Belizeans. But, Director of the Traffic Department, Kent Gabb, says they and the police have been doing their best to keep things flowing as smoothly as possible.

“We are coordinating our manpower together and we are executing the different operations that we are doing for this Christmas season together at the different hot spots throughout the city.”

Gabb says the city has reached the stage where it is just too small to accommodate the number of vehicles on the streets. While he has been making recommendations to address the growing problem, for the moment, all motorists can do is exercise some patience. Jacqueline Woods for News 5.
