Two more children die accidentally
Two more children have lost their lives, the latest in an unusual string of unrelated accidental deaths. On Tuesday night twelve year old Elbin Alvarez of Valley of Peace died suddenly at his home, apparently the victim of a freak accident. His sixty-three year old mother, Irma Alvarez, told police that Elbin was playing in a hammock when she left the room to use the bathroom. When she returned a few minutes later, she found his body lying on the floor, not moving. Police were called and Elbin’s body was taken to Belmopan Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police are investigating and a post mortem will be conducted. At this time, it appears that the boy may have fallen out of the hammock and hit his head or broken his neck.
In a similarly tragic incident, this time in the Mennonite settlement of Little Belize in the Corozal District, a baby has drowned. Details are incomplete, but police report that thirteen month old Katarina Loewen was playing near a well or reservoir in her family’s yard when she fell into the water and drowned. Her parents were not home and she was ostensibly under the care of a seventeen year old babysitter.
