Usher and Williams vie for U.D.P. mayoral nod

With the U.D.P. energy running high for Sunday’s mayoral convention, News 5 spoke today with the two candidates: Wayne Usher and Ann-Marie Williams. Usher, who entered the arena in September, believes his years in managerial positions make him the ideal candidate for City Hall.

Wayne Usher, U.D.P. Mayoral Aspirant

“Due to the work that I do and at the levels that I have been, I can interact with the poor man on the street because I was born poor… I’m a confident person. I bring to the position my training, my experience, my qualifications, and above all the commitment to do better.”

“I will lead that group in City Hall to improve the Belize City and renew this city. That is what I will do, provide strong leadership, no fooling around, hard work from the get go. We will have a good time, but my team will be rallying and I will manage this City properly.”

Usher says in the unlikely probability that he is not successful, he will still contest the March election as part of the U.D.P. City Council slate. As for his opponent, Ann-Marie Williams, she began campaigning way back in July. Not surprisingly, she also believes that she’s got what it takes to win on Sunday.

“Well it’s like a mini election, your machinery has to be well oiled and it’s basically, get your cards lined up, your people lined up, you have the street list in hand, and the people who say they will come out and vote for you, it’s not up to them to actually come out, but you have to be on top making sure that their out by a certain time. If you get the voters out early, it’s an advantage. So we’re planning on doing that. Also, doing follow-up calls and everything, but not to let the cat out of the bag, that’s basically it.”

“Ann-Marie Williams is committed. Ann-Marie is also the candidate who wants to do good for the city. I’ve grown up in the city all my life and I looked at how the city has changed, and I’m saying that if you think that you are better off eleven years later; the P.U.P. City Council is in for eleven years, the U.D.P. has been out for all that time. If you think your city is better off and nothing can be done, then you vote for the P.U.P. If you think something can be done, then vote for Ann-Marie.”

The convention takes place at Bird’s Isle on Sunday from ten in the morning to five in the evening.
