D.R. blows out Belize in basketball
The elation following Sunday night’s basketball victory over Mexico at the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador, has turned to embarrassment as the Belize National Team took a licking Monday night at the hands of the Dominican Republic. The final score was eighty-nine, forty-three. Belize was without the services of top scoring guard Darwin Carter, who received a one game suspension following a game closing slugfest on Sunday night. His Mexican opponent was also given a twenty-four hour siesta. Despite the loss, Belize will advance to the final round, assuming that the D.R. defeats Mexico tonight. That means Belize will play on Thursday against top seed Puerto Rico. If we are unsuccessful in that match-up, Belize would compete for a bronze medal on Friday, perhaps against arch rival Barbados. And that about sums up Belize’s hopes for another medal in the thirty-three nation regional competition. With the exception of Matthew Anderson’s bronze in racquetball and our hopes for a breakthrough in basketball, no other Belizean athletes are expected to be in contention for glory.
