Fiona Humes takes 1st in cycle race

Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re right on time for this latest issue of Sports Monday. Week eleven of the Belize Premier Football league found second place Sagitun being hosted at the Ricalde Stadium by Corozal Victory as the race to make the four team playoffs intensifies.
With only twelve points to its season total and facing a squad with nineteen points, the home team comes out firing as Erwin Cano show off his range, but Giovanni Rodriguez takes to the air to come up with the save.
It’s more Corozal when Jason Hall fires off the left side, but the scoreboard remains unmoved. At the other end, Bent Burgess somehow finds Wilhelm Coe, but his right foot offering inside the box inches outside the target.
Again, it’s Corozal pressing the attack when Rupert Smith fires this spectacular missile that crashes into the crossbar, but there’s still no damage done. Meanwhile, Delmar Sutherland, playing outside the goal, makes a fine move here, bit shows absolutely no finish as a striker.
Folks, we’re not certain even after watching the replay in slow-mo. But you make the call, is this cause for a penalty? Referee Ruperto Vicente does not believe so.
It’s some forty-four minutes into the ballgame when this corner kick finds the head of Bent Burgess and Sagitun takes a 1-zip lead to the locker room.
So we go to the second half, and we’re not even two minutes in when Hilberto Muschamp misplays this spotkick to commit the dreaded auto goal, and just like that we’ve got a 1-1 tie.
Corozal then immediately goes for the lead, but this header drops behind the crossbar. It seems Corozal smells victory as Rupert Smith does everything right except get the pill between the sticks.
Hey, Erwin Cano, these are the situations when you as a striker must come up with the conversion play. As a result, Sagitun hangs on for the 1-1 regulation tie. They go to twenty points and Corozal has moved up to thirteen.
In other matches over the weekend, Kulture Yabra remained atop the standings, jerking Juventus 2-1. Builders Hardware Bandits kept its stake in the playoffs race by bombing Griga United 2-1, while San Pedro and Acros Real Verdes settled for a 1-1 stalemate.
Changing gears folks, let’s check in with the finish of the Alpheus Williams Cycle Classic presented by the Belize Cycling Association, which left Belmopan at 9:00 a.m. yesterday. It’s fifty miles later when Ariel Rosado of Santino’s enters the Marion Jones Sporting Complex alone. And even after the regulation two laps, it’s Ariel Rosado unchallenged into the winner’s circle. Pulling up second is Vernon Terry of Cayo, while Douglas Lamb out sprints Francisco “The Animal” Flores for third place.
On the junior side, Armando Castillo of Santino’s makes it look rather easy on his way to the big W. Miguel Jones then easily out runs the pack for second place, while Kenroy Gladden rounds out the top three.
On female side, break out the champagne for Fiona Humes who finally exacts sweet revenge on Anamarie Bennett by winning the ride in unchallenged fashion. And, yes Fiona, we know you’re enjoying the triumph. As for the number one female cyclist, today Anamarie Bennett has to settle for second best.
Now here’s a quick look at the cycle race presented by Kevin Hall and the E.P. Yorke Cycling Club. Crossing the finish line first is Roque Matus, followed by Alfonso Martinez, Marlon Smith, James Welch and John Burns in that order. And we also take this opportunity to remind you that coming up shortly is election of officers in the Belize Cycling Association. You will want to stay tuned for that.
Turning to the Central Division Secondary School Basketball championships at the City Centre, Wesley College swept Gwen Liz in a two games, 27-18 and 28-21 to grab the female title. On the male side, Excelsior edged Gwen Liz 57-43, but Gwen Liz rebounded in game two Friday night with a 39-36 win to force a decisive game three. It comes up at the City Centre tonight and you don’t want to miss it.
Talking of basketball, we’ve got triumphant news in the nineteenth Central American and Caribbean games being hosted at El Salvador. Belize beats Mexico in basketball play, I think it 89-80. Channel 5 will have a lot more for you on this particular ballgame.
That’s our show for today, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
