Belize Protests as Guat Soldiers Nab Fellow Citizen in our Territory
More details of an arrest made by Guatemalan soldiers in Belizean territory are emerging, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that they were not approached for assistance. The soldiers, as shown in amateur video, were taking away the alleged suspect, a Guatemalan, in the robbery of a Guatemalan moneychanger in Belize over the weekend. Today, C.E.O. in the Ministry Pat Andrews said they have officially protested the breach of protocol to their Guatemalan counterparts.
Pat Andrews, C.E.O., Ministry of Foreign Affairs
“It happened over the weekend; we knew about it right away. It was an incident that basically they came over into Belize to perform the arrest and took the individual back over. Because we have to comply with the framework and the confidence building measures, we have already documented it to them, just thanking them but telling them that basically there are protocols that they have to basically go through before they come into Belize, but we have dealt with it.”

“Any indication of where the person was apprehended? Was he Belizean, Guatemalan, which nationality and where the incident actually took place?”
Pat Andrews
“We understood that he was a Guatemalan, but he was apprehended on this side of the border and taken over back into Guatemala.”

“But the incident with the moneychanger took place in Guatemala?”
Pat Andrews
“The incident itself, I think, took place on this side.”
