Senator Lizarraga went on to address another key area of concern in the Budget: what will be allocated to addressing the root causes of crime such as joblessness and lack of opportunities? Education and Finance typically dominate the budget pie, with much of that given over to salaries. The Government will also be mindful of streamlining resources as ministries last year reported financial cuts, including Foreign Affairs and Health. But the Senator says that investments here will pay significant dividends down the road.

“We have to start paying more attention in our budget, and I’m going to be looking at that as well – one of the big things that concern me. What are we doing – because this is where the rubber meets the road, in the budget. What resources are you allocating to ensure that the root causes of crime are being affected? So that we can begin to see that our people can live without resorting to crime.”
