Yabra upset by Verdes in B.P.F.L. action

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and we welcome you to this latest version of Sports Monday. Week ten of the Belize Premier Football League found defending champion Kulture Yabra of Belize City being hosted at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio by Acros Real Verdes. Actually, this match-up seems to be a tail of two teams streaking in opposite directions since Acros Verdes comes in only one place out of last place with seven points.

We open to Eden Rowley’s individual effort culminating in this shot at Darren Hinds, but it has not the pace to make an impression on the goalkeeper. Again, it’s the defending champion Kulture Yabra on the attack and Landi Pinelo must be taken to task for not converting on what appears to be a perfect opportunity.

A few moments later, Pinelo tries to make amends with this left foot offering, but he misses the target. At the other end, Verdes shows nice teamwork on the give and go, but the shot at the end of the run is somewhat less than potent. However, on the very next play the Verdes team presents much more peril to Shane Moody, however, the ball sails past the sticks.

Folks, this sequence almost captures the swing in momentum in the ball game that puts Acros at the ascendancy, but they nevertheless come up empty despite a power pack press at this point, and at the half we have a scoreless stalemate.

So we go to second half and we’re some seven minutes in when Gigio Flores finds Roberto da Silva, who licks this left foot at Moody that lands behind him and San Ignacio’s pride takes a 1-zip lead.

Verdes then immediately tries to double the score on this press, but like they say, football is a game of inches. Downfield, the defending champions looks for the equalizer when Oliver Hendricks finds Landi Pinelo, only to see his header picked out of the air by a diving Darren Hinds.

But Verdes isn’t fazed, and they come right back with this effort to extend to lead, which is handled by Shane Moody. It’s getting late, so Deon Flowers tries launch this left foot, but can’t get his body around to be effective and Acros Verdes blanks league leading Kulture Yabra 1-zip.

Meanwhile folks, all Regent Cup matches over the weekend resulted in a 1-nil score. Sagitun scorched Griga 1-zip. Builder’s Hardware clubbed Juventus 1-zip and San Pedro Turquoise beat Corozal Victory 1-nil.

Nevertheless, Yabra remains atop the standing with twenty-one points, Sagitun has pulled up to nineteen for the unchallenged control of second place, San Pedro moves up to sixteen, getting past Juventus, who is stalled at fourteen points, Belmopan moves up to twelve, Corozal stays at twelve, Acros Verdes moves from seven to ten points, and Griga remain in the cellar with five points.

In news from the nineteenth Central American and Caribbean games being held in El Salvador, Belizean Matthew Anderson got off to a good start in the racquetball competition with a 9-1 win over Venezuela. Tomorrow he goes up against Puerto Rico.

In closing, Joseph Blatter, President of FIFA, touched down today in Belize for a 1-day visit. After meeting the Prime Minister and other government officials the FIFA president was to meet with the breakaway Belize football confederation led by Omario Perdomo of the Belize Premier Football League, Dean Ottley of the Belize District Football Association and of course, D.F.C. official, Ruperto Vicente. Hopefully Joseph Blatter will use his negotiating skills to calm the terrible situation that exists today in Belizean football. Hopefully he will be able to accomplish what has not been able to be accomplished in many moons now.

That’s our show for today, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
