UNICEF Belize speaks out
The urban violence and abuse of children has prompted UNICEF to speak out. The U.N. organization issued a release this afternoon highlighting the responsibility of adults to protect children and encourage them to grow. Children, says UNICEF, have been tragically hurt and some have lost their lives due to gun violence, physical abuse and sexual violence. The organization also notes that last year, there were too many similar stories of gun violence, physical abuse and sexual abuse against children. And that every day, children in Belize are forced to live with the growing fear that they are not safe and traumatized that the violence experienced by their neighbours can just as easily touch their own lives and shatter their hopes and dreams. UNICEF states that violence against children is unacceptable and implores everyone to respect and protect children and their right to life. It calls all to join with them in advocating and working to transform communities into the positive, nurturing spaces for children.
