Pen expands his horizons in new exhibition

When it comes to sheer creative talent, there are few Belizeans in the same league as Pen Cayetano. The only problem is that we don’t see enough of him. Fortunately, News 5’s Jacqueline Woods sat him down at the opening of his latest exhibition of paintings.

For the past twelve years, forty-eight year old Pen Cayetano has been living in Bonn, Germany. While Pen usually returns home twice each year, this time the artist and musician doing things a little bit differently. Cayetano has put together a collection of oil paintings which depict not only the Garifuna culture, but other ethnic groups in Belize.

“When I did exhibitions in the past, people use to tell me bwai you only the paint Garifuna things, you have to come better than that. So I think they are right too. So for this exhibition here, this fusion of culture, I am trying to express this whole multi-cultural movement here in Belize.”

“I am trying to show the roots, how it used to be and then that will await them in the future in the movements too. So I mix up all this together and this is the result of this kind of paintings that I do now.”

In case you are wondering…yes, all the pieces are on sale. The show, Cultural Fusion, runs until November twenty-seventh at the Mexican Institute of Cooperation and Culture. Jacqueline Woods for News 5.
