Poster competition showcases images of peace
Art in Belize comes in many forms and an exhibition on this week in Belize City proves you don’t have to be an expert to go public.

For the next two days, over a hundred entries submitted to the Belize City Lions Club as part of a poster contest will be displayed at the House of Culture. The first prize entry that will be forwarded to the Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest was painted by standard six student Amanda Nunez.
Amanda Nunez, Student, Belize Elementary School
“It’s about peace, it represents a lady sleeping and she’s dreaming of peace. The doves as her hair represents all the nations coming together without and borders.”

“Where did you get an idea for that poster?”
Amanda Nunez
“I was flipping through some magazines and a saw a lady with leaves as her hair and so I thought that, instead of leaves I can use doves to show peace. And I just thought that she should be sleeping and dreaming of peace.”
Nunez will compete against thousands of children from all over the world for a cash prize of five thousand dollars and a paid trip to New York City for Lions Day at the United Nations.
But back in Belize, another young participant in the national competition was awarded a consolation prize for his efforts. Kaylon Young, a student from St. John Vianney explored his artistic talents despite significant obstacles.
Kaylon Young, Student, St. John Vianney
“Lots of people could be like me, but lot of people could do different things, everybody got a talent and where there’s will there’s a way. So I draw hands in my poster, because I think most people’s one look better than mine”
Janelle Chanona
“With this prize, you think you might consider a career in art?”
Kaylon Young
“Maybe.” (smiles)
Other winning entries included the work of Yu Chan Haung of St. Ignatius School and Bernard Young from Grace Primary School. Reporting for News 5, I am Janelle Chanona.
The art exhibition is open to the public between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the House of Culture in Belize City. The show closes on Friday.
