Courts Helps Out at Sister Cecilia Home
Thirty-three residents at the Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly were treated to a tea party by Unicomer Belize as the company undertook a week-long of activities in volunteerism. Over the past two weeks, the home got a fifteen-thousand-dollar facelift and the folks had every reason to celebrate today. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Unicomer is currently operating in twenty-four countries across world and over the years, has been giving back to respective communities as part of its social corporate responsibility. In Belize, the company is celebrating its tenth anniversary of volunteerism and has once again chosen HelpAge Belize and Sister Cecilia House for the Elderly as benefactors.

“The topic of elders plays an important role in our country because they were the ones that raised our generations and the generations that are coming. So as a corporate company, what we decided, you know we are going to have a Unicomer volunteer week and this time we are going to do partnership with HelpAge. Today in Belize City, we are doing a tea party; it is a collaboration with HelpAge and Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly. For the past three weeks, we have been working with renovations at Sister Cecilia. So our volunteers came, took a hour from their lunch to come in here and paint. So we decided to paint inside the home, renovate the kitchen; we installed new lights, new fans. And today we are also donating to the elders, a fifty-five inch TCL TV.”
Today, the thirty-seven resident men and women over at Sister Cecilia were treated to a tea party courtesy of Unicomer. Since the beginning of the week, HelpAge branches across the country have been hosting the celebrations with assistance from the corporate sponsor. Public Relations Officer Grisel Carballo explains:

“The tea party, the way we schedule, we have shifts with our Unicomer volunteers. They take one hour of their lunch break and for this one hour they go and sit down and give back time to the elders. So it is kind of an adopt-a-grandfather, adopt-a-grandmother time. They get their names and also sit, have a good time, play bingo; they have karaoke. Some of our volunteers will be karaoking for them. So we have many presentations for them and the idea is for them to come and enjoy, relax and just give them a time for the elders.”
Chairman of the Sister Cecilia Home of the Elderly, Bernard Adolphus says that it is important to get the vulnerable population active.

“We have a combination of members from HelpAge and Sister Cecilia Home, the residents, and they get together like this and a while ago they were playing bingo. And that stimulates the mind, the fingers and the body movements. And you need to do much more like this. As a volunteer chairman, I feel proud to see the support that we have had and we cannot thank Courts and Unicomer enough.”
