Hondurans arrested for theft on atoll
In another action by fisheries officers, four Hondurans have been arrested in connection with the theft of a boat at Glover’s Reef. Brothers Tony and Selvin Martinez, Herman Chavez and Jeraldo Alvarez, all of Tela, Honduras, are in the Queen Street lockup tonight. They are accused of making off with a twenty-five foot skiff belonging to the Glover’s Reef Research Station. The heist at the remote atoll took place in the wee hours of Tuesday morning and the men were pursued by a fisheries officer who fired several shots before detaining them. Formal charges will be levied in court on Thursday. The southern cayes and atolls are often the site of boat thefts as well as illegal fishing by Hondurans and Guatemalans, not to mention Belizeans.
