Carnage Started with Victor Gibbs’ Newstime Murder Friday
The bloodbath started in downtown Belize City with the murder of Victor Gibbs. The thirty-year-old Belize City resident was shot several times inside his parked vehicle. When police arrived on the scene at the corner of King Street and West Canal, Gibbs was already dead. Police said today that his killing is not connected to the gang-related gun violence in the city. But is his killing connected to a fatal traffic accident in which Gibbs was the driver? News Five’s Andrea Polanco tells us more.

Just after six on Friday evening, several shots rang out in the downtown area. The target was thirty-year-old Victor Gibbs. He was shot to death inside his vehicle on the corner of King Street and West Canal. Police were on the scene shortly after.
ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City
“Upon their arrival they observed a silver in color Ford Escape vehicle in the middle of the street in King Street. Upon making checks inside the vehicle, police found the motionless body of a male person who was later identified as Victor Gibbs, with several gunshot wounds to the body.”
Police say that at this time they don’t have a clear motive for this murder. What they do know is that Gibbs wasn’t connected to any of the gangs in the City – and so it is likely that his killing had nothing to do with other shootings that happened over the weekend.
“The motive for this shooting, we are still kinda puzzled. We know that Mr. Gibbs is not related to any of the gangs in Belize City.”
On Saturday, July thirtieth 2016, Gibbs was driving a vehicle that knocked down Emily Guy in front of the bus terminal in Belize City around six that morning. But by eleven that day Gibbs died at the hospital. He was slapped with six charges, including driving with alcohol level above the prescribed limit. Police are now looking to see if Gibbs’ murder is connected to the fatal accident.
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“Yes, we have had information that he was involved in a previous accident where he was charged with somebody’s death and that is an angle the police are looking at, at this moment.”

“Might it be a revenge for knocking down and killing Miss Emily Guy?”
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“Well, we are looking at different possibilities as to what could have caused his death. Like I tell you, we have questioned other family members to try establish a motive as to why it is that his happened to him.”
“Someone waylaid him, waited until he parked or whatever the situation, and pounced on him?”
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“Well, what we understand is that, yes, he left from his house on Mex Avenue and went to buy at a shop on West Canal. As he left from the canal side, whilst he was traveling on West Canal, he was approached by a male person who fired the shot. Yes, we have several leads that we are following and we suspect that is one of the leads that is a possible lead to a motive in regards to the shooting.”
Police recovered several point nine millimeter expended shells from the scene. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
