Police seek murder suspect in Guatemala

In related news, three members of the Belize Police Department travelled yesterday to Poptun, Guatemala, where they got to see a suspect held in connection with last month’s murder of Jalacte Alcalde, Antigonus Garcia. According to police sources, the officers are convinced that the man being held, Edgar Aguilar Lopez, is the same man who committed the murder on October twenty-sixth. And while Guatemalan police have been nothing but cooperative in the investigation, the matter of bringing Aguilar, a Guatemalan citizen, into Belize to face charges, will not be particularly easy. Official representation will now be made through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to have him face justice in what remains an intriguing case. As for who, if anyone, may have ordered the hit on Garcia, police tell News 5 that they have pursued reports of a link to a man in Bella Vista Village, but the person named has not been found. Police believe the murder of the Alcalde was drug related, while the Opposition press is claiming that party politics was involved.
