South tops north in B.P.F.L. All Star game
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’ve just logged on to this fresh delivery of Sports Monday. After seven weeks of regular league play, the Belize Premier Football League finally staged its All Star match at the M.C.C. Grounds Saturday night under lights to herald the arrival of the halfway point of this particular competition. We must say the south, which was made up of players from Sagitun, the Bandits, Verdes and Griga got off to a better start than the counterpart from the north, which was manned by players from Kulture Yabra, Juventus, San Pedro and Corozal.
We will say though, the south should have done better on this press, but like they say, its still early. Still, it’s the south on the move as number fifteen, Harrison Roches goes solo on this individual effort, but the left foot leaps over the crossbar. Here’s another golden opportunity squandered by the south, and we’re wondering what’s amiss.
It’s same twenty-five minutes in when the north gets something going, but again, they cannot come up with the conversion.
At the other end, this nice display of footwork by number twelve forces Shane Moody into the air, but he does come down with the pill. Downfield this beautiful chest kill by Edon “Yellowman” Rowley gets him this shot at goal, but the ball veers outside the sticks.
Meanwhile, how the north comes away empty on this press is anybody’s guess. Just before the half expires, Harrison Roches gets another shot to put the south ahead, but it’s not to be as we have a scoreless stalemate at intermission.
Meanwhile folks, the half time should find a foot race for football’s elite–maybe it’s because there’s a thousand dollars at stake, but the guys simply don’t listen well to instructions. Anyway, after two heats and innumerable false starts–we’d say about two dozen–this is the final run. A couple players still don’t believe it’s the real thing, but Vallan Symms is certainly not one of them as he races to be the first at the finish line, gets his thousand dollars and we say congratulations.
But back to the All Star match. It’s Julio Valle with the opportunity to open the second half with a goal, but he allows Stanley Jordon to come up with a big time save.
Folks, it’s late in the ballgame when Kenneth Brooks catches up with this deflection and the south has a 1-zip lead. That’s the way it ended as the south gets the W and Sports Monday says congrats. Regular season action with the B.P.F.L. season now resumes this weekend with all eight teams in action.
Changing gears folks, we head to the August residence on the Western Highway for the start of yesterday’s cycle race presented by E.P. Yorke Sporting Club and Kevin Hall, in memory of the late Shamba Dominguez.
On the female side, the two contenders are reigning Cross Country champion Anamarie Bennett and former champ Fiona Humes. And here’s a peek at the field on the male side heading into this adventure.
This is the breakaway trio that dominates the race: Kevin Hall, Lindy Gillette and Patrick Herbert; although the chase bunch does have them within their sights.
So we go to the finish and here is Kevin Hall winning this event easily, forcing Patrick Herbert into second, Lindy Gillette then finishes third, Collet “Bunas” Maheia takes fourth, while Errol “Glad” Gentle rounds out the top five. And here is Anamarie Bennett taking top honours on the female side.
We certainly want to say good show to the E.P. Yorke Sporting Club and Kevin Hall, who was not only an organiser, but also a competitor. Keep up the good work.
That’s our show for today. We want to thank our cameramen for their great work over the weekend, Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
