Cop faces charges after shooting suspect
Corozal police have charged one of their own with attempted murder, maim, and deadly use of harm. This follows a shooting yesterday in Chunox Village, which left Mexican national, thirty-eight year old Francisco Burgess, in critical condition in the K.H.M.H. with a bullet wound over his left eye. The officer, Constable Miguel Alpuche, shot Burgess after Burgess reportedly pulled out a machete and threatened a fellow officer. The altercation stemmed from police efforts to apprehend a friend of Burgess, one Martin Melendez, following a report that Melendez had assaulted and threatened to kill his common-law wife. Police Commissioner Carmen Zetina had assigned a team of senior officers to investigate the matter, promising a swift, fair, and thorough inquiry. That inquiry has apparently concluded that constable Alpuche used excessive force in carrying out his duties.
