Police Talk Easter Safety

As happens annually at this time of year, most Belizeans have left for points north like Corozal, Chetumal and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico; west to Cayo and Benque; or south to Dangriga, Hopkins, Placencia and P.G., or even to the cayes. But wherever you’re watching this newscast tonight, know that in Belize City the police department will be actively looking out to stem crime and keep the bloodletting to a minimum, if any at all. But, as always, there are things you can do to be safe and ensure the safety of your loved ones. Officer Commanding Eastern Division (South) Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett shared a quick rundown of those, as well as his Easter wishes.

“I want to wish all Belizeans, not only on the Southside of Belize City, a happy and safe Easter 2018.  We the citizens living in the affected areas and in the City of Belize as a whole, we should do our part to help the police to police better. If there is an issue with a police [officer], don’t hold back and say, “This police did me wrong, so I won’t engage in the law-abiding efforts.” For Easter, I want to say keep safe; I know a lot of people will be heading toward an oasis, a water spot to swim. If you can’t swim, have somebody who is around who can swim who can protect you if need be. If you’re driving, don’t drink, and if you drink, find a designated driver. If you’re leaving your homes, please, leave somebody to look after your home, because we don’t want you to come back and find out that your house has been burgled over the weekend. It’s a long weekend, so let’s take sufficient care to keep ourselves safe. And if there is anything that you believe the police should know, please let us know.
