Yabra tops Corozal in B.P.F.L. action
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re right on time for this fresh dish of Sports Monday. Week six of the Belize premier Football League competition found the Corozal Victory almost at the bottom of the eight team standings, ahead of only winless Griga United as they marched into the M.C.C. Grounds for Sunday’s shoot-out with the league leading and defending champions, Kulture Yabra of Belize City.
The visitors display early determination, but little of the expertise needed to get the pill past Shane Moody. Kulture’s reply comes from team captain Norman “Tilliman” Nunez, but good defensive work by Victory forces the shot off the target.
However, on this press, Landi Pinelo has no excuse for this rather weak offering from point-blank range. It’s some twenty-one minutes in when “Tilliman” Nunez deals this perfect delivery to Daniel Thomas and he makes the cord shake for the Yabra 1-zip lead.
Keep your eye on this spotkick by Corozal. It hits the human wall, but watch the put-back by Hall, which forces Moody into a truly spectacular save. At the other end, Yabra gets its turn to churn some offensive off the spotkick, but Landi Pinelo’s floater inches outside the far upright.
At intermission, the city team gets to take a 1-zip lead to the locker room.
In second half play, Yabra looks to extend he lead when Eden “Yellowman” Rawley sets table for Tilliman, but the right foot push takes to the sky.
Meanwhile, the Yabra fans yell for a penalty on this press and we must agree it looks that way, but the man with the whistle makes no call.
Sensing it’s getting late, Oliver Hendricks tries to take Corozal on his back–but Shane Moody handles his shot easily. Landi Pinelo then unleashes this right-foot bomb that just whistles past the target. Of course, Corozal isn’t about to quit and this low cruise left foot certainly forced Moody to come up big time. He does, but when the long whistle blows, Kulture Yabra wins its fifth in six weeks for fifteen points to stay atop the league.
In other results from over the weekend, Builders Hardware Bandits bombed formerly undefeated San Pedro 3-1; Juventus crushes Griga United 4-1, while Verdes and Sagitun struggled to a 2-2 stalemate.
Changing gears, a Belizean contingent will be participating in the Central American and Caribbean Games to kick off at El Salvador on November twenty-eighth. So far here are the names we know that are making the trip after checking with the Olympic Committee.
Shooting: Charles Chavannes, Reginald McIntosh and Norman Pennill.
Cycling: Mateo Cruz, Ernest Meighan, Ariel Rosado, Andrew Smiling, Michael Lewis and Jeffrey Zelaya.
Racquetball: Matthew Anderson.
We are certain that boxing and basketball will also be making this journey to El Salvador, but we can tell you basketball seems to be having a whole lot of problems in getting their team organised. Word reaching us seems to indicate that most of the players want to be paid to make the journey and the organisers are opting for maybe a team like M & M Christian Ambassadors, topped with the guys who want to go and don’t need to get paid.
That’s our show for today, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
