AG Says UNCAC Assessment is Near

When we caught up with the Attorney General, he also gave us an update on the United Nations Convention Against Corruption that was at the center of the 2016 strikes by the Belize National Teachers Union.  If you’ll recall, a scheduled visit of the team of experts supervising Belize’s road to implementing the United Nations Convention against Corruption was delayed earlier this year.  The team of assessors, which consists of experts from Tuvalu and Haiti, will now be in the Jewel later this year but another organization will be here in about a week see what progress Belize has on its corruption legislation.

“There’s a self assessment for UNCAC that has been taking place and has been turned in and Tuvalu and Haiti couldn’t come at the same time which was early March. But there is a planned visit for them to be in the country in July for UNCAC. And then there is also an organization called MESICIC which is hemispheric. It is an O.A.S. instrument that deals also with anti-corruption and in less than a week we will have assessors from different countries coming into Belize, Grenada being one of them to see where we are with the legislation and what steps we are taking to battle corruption.”
