We found some of the fair organizers busily putting the final touches on some of the art and craft work that has made the Chinese Food and Crafts fair a success over the past two years.

“Yes quite a lot, it’s become very popular. Every time after we finish the fair, they are asking, when are you going to be having this kind of food fair and handicraft fair?”
The fair is held to raise money for one organisation that helps people in times of disaster. According to Ambassador Charles Tsai all the funds raised from the activity go to the Belize Red Cross.

“The Red Cross, because they have been doing a lot of things for the hurricane rehabilitation programme. So we are very happy that we can use this opportunity to introduce Chinese food and craft and in the meantime we can do some charity to donate all the proceeds to the Red Cross.”
One craft that has been the biggest attraction at the fair is the macramé. It has been a part of the Chinese culture for thousands of years and at the fair, you will be given the opportunity to learn this ancient art.

“We want to introduce it to the people here. It’s a beautiful art, so during tomorrow’s fair we will provide materials to show the people here who are interested. They can learn right away, we will provide teachers to teach them and instructions as well, it’s easy to learn.”

“I notice you can do quite a number of designs, you have fish, turtle, so it’s just up to your own creative imagination as to what you want to design?”
Linda Tsai
“Yes, after you learn the basics, you can use the basic notes to create something different, from the small item to other kinds like the hanging ornaments like that.”
