Contract Signed for Airport Link Road
The Government of Belize also signed a contract with CISCO Construction Limited, for a little over thirty-four million dollars for the construction of the Airport Link Road. The proposal includes the construction of one high-level bridge, which will connect the George Price Highway to the airport access road near Gentrac Belize Limited. Additional works will include the construction of several roundabouts. The road work is being funded through a loan from the OPEC’s Fund for International Development. Minister of Works Rene Montero and area representative of Belize Rural Central Minister Beverly Williams were at Monday’s contract signing.
Rene Montero, Minister of Works
“This contract is being awarded to Cisco Construction Limited for a total of thirty-four million two hundred and seventy-four thousand three hundred and six dollars and seventeen cents. It also involves about five miles upgrading of a road and also involves the construction of a bridge. The importance of this road is because it will involve people. It will impact about seventy-five thousand people and also the jobs it will create for people is very important.”
Beverly Williams, Area Rep., Belize Rural Central
“The jobs that will be provided in the area; the road meaning the access from one highway to the other, particularly as it relates to the Western Paradise community and coming through the airport. So, it cuts off Belize City. I recall the transportation coming from north and the movement of goods could then be diverted from that side and across that way to the Port and leave out the impact that the traffic would have on the city. So, it is a welcomed initiative and it opens economic activity for my area, including tourism. And there are people out there who already have land and can probably move immediately to agriculture and other activities in that area. So, for me, as the area representative, it is a welcome initiative.”
