In Belmopan, Stolen Chain Leads to Fatal Stabbing

Luis Monge

A Roaring Creek resident is tonight in police custody, following an early morning murder in Belmopan. Reports are that as police were closing up shop at La Cabana Night Club, one of its bartenders and another person ran to the aid of a woman who had been robbed of her gold chain. The duo, Luis Monge and Dennis Monterrosa pursued the robber in an attempt to recover the stolen chain, but ended up being stabbed. Police intervened shortly after and detained the robber who now faces charges for murder because Monge perished minutes later, while receiving treatment at the Western Regional Hospital. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Just after two a.m. today police responded to a scuffle between three persons on Zultana Street in Belmopan. A warning shot was fired and a man was taken into custody. But soon after the officers would realize that during the melee, two of the men had been stabbed. A blood trail several yards long indicates that twenty-three-year-old Luis Monge hemorrhaged before he was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital where he succumbed shortly after.

“I got a message from my aunt saying that they are at the hospital because something happened to Luis. I called and asked what happened and they told me that they are at the hospital because they had killed my cousin. I reacted and my uncle picked me up and we went to the hospital. By the time we got there, he was already dead and they took him to the morgue.”

The fatal stabbing of Monge has left his family in disbelief. Police confirm that he and nineteen-year-old Dennis Monterrosa were stabbed under the left arm and to the head, respectively, by a man who reportedly stole a gold chain from a woman who had just exited La Cabana Night Club. The duo pursued the suspect in an effort to retrieve the stolen item and was knifed in the process.

“I know that they stabbed him under the arm and he lost a lot of blood and the hospital didn’t do anything. Yes, the place was already closing and he heard the lady say that she was robbed and she’s his friend. And he wanted to help he and capture the robber. He came out running, even though his brother told him not to go and leave that alone. But he has a good heart and wanted to help his friend. That’s when it happened.”

Monge is the son of Ismael “El Bukis” Chacon, who won Channel Five’s KTV Latino. He recently started renting with his brother who is also a bartender at La Cabana Night Club. He will be remembered as a kind loving person who always helped others.
